Loofah sponges, the right care
To ensure that you can use your loofah sponge for a long time, you need to clean it regularly. Otherwise bacteria and dirt will collect in the sponge and that is not particularly hygienic. You can clean it with vinegar or wash it in the washing machine. We recommend doing this with your sponge every two weeks.
In general, however, it is important:
- Rinse your sponge with cold, clean water after each use. This is how the worst of the dirt goes out.
- After using your sponge, hang it up in a dry place or put it in a clean, warm place.
With the shower sponge be careful of that: Your sponge only! Even if they are your family or friends. Only you should use your sponge. After all, skin particles end up in such a shower sponge and we shouldn't exchange them with others. Because of hygiene reasons.
Vinegar: Clean the loofah sponge properly with vinegar
To clean your loofah sponge in a vinegar bath, you will need:
- A bowl that the sponge fits into.
- Regular table vinegar. It is available in the supermarket for less than one euro, also in a glass bottle.
- Water from the tap.
You have to follow these steps when cleaning:
Prepare the vinegar-water mixture: The liquid should consist of around 50% vinegar and 50% water. To do this, fill the bowl halfway with water and halfway with vinegar. Warning: do not fill the bowl to the brim. Make sure there is about four finger-widths of space. The sponge initially displaces water upwards and we don't want a water-vinegar mess in your kitchen.
Preparing the loofah sponge: Before you put your loofah sponge in the bowl, rinse it out again with clear water. This is how oily residues or coarse food residues leave the sponge.
Insert loofah sponge: Place the loofah sponge in the water-vinegar bath for a maximum of two minutes. The acid in the vinegar kills the bacteria during this time.
Rinse the loofah sponge: Then rinse the loofah sponge well again with clear water. Complete.
Washing machine: wash the loofah sponge properly in the washing machine
You can also wash your loofah sponge in the washing machine. Throw it in the washing machine for that. You shouldn't wash it hotter than 60 degrees and important: don't use fabric softener; the loofah sponge doesn't like that.
We also recommend: rinse it thoroughly before washing it. Otherwise, oily residues (e.g. from washing dishes after the food fight with your veggie bolo) could end up in the washing machine. You don't have to wash it by yourself either. He is happy to end up in the washing machine with a load of coloured laundry (not whites).
The same applies here: the loofah sponge likes organic washing powder best.
Dispose of the loofah properly
The loofah sponge is the dried pulp of the loofah plant. So it is a purely vegetable product and biodegradable. So you can dispose of it on your compost or in the brown bin.
How long can I use my loofah sponge?
If you care for it properly and clean it regularly, your sponge will last longer than a plastic sponge. It is important that you clean it once a week on average.
But everything has an end - even the life of a loofah sponge. Over time, the fibres dissolve and it becomes smaller and smaller. At the latest when it is only as big as your thumb, it's time for a new sponge.
We wish you a lot of fun with it for so long. If you have any questions, please ask and bye plastic!
